The subtopic I chose for my research simulation was the use of technology, specifically computers vs. Ipads and whether they were helpful in impacting preschool student achievement. I chose this topic as there seems to be a lot of pressure to include technology in the classroom, computers, ipads, smartboards and the like in the classroom seems to be a selling point of the school  to families and teachers alike. But..does this mean it is in the best interest of the child, especially when there are so many studies which encourage us to limit screen time and get back to exploring nature and hands on learning? So I am genuinely curious as to how and why we should implement technology. So far it appears that technology can aide achievement but mostly through peer and teacher interaction with the children while the use the devices.

  1. Hello Jennifer,
I think you have chosen a great topic. I can't wait to hear what new insights you share about technology. Currently, in my school district we have included smart boards, computers, and i pads as a way to help support learning concepts going on in the classroom. I know in pre-k under the pre-k guidelines in Texas, technology is a domain that is included. The children have to learn certain things like opening and closing a program, navigate a mouse, learn certain terminology (mouse, screen, etc). I think it is needed as to stay current with the times.
    Thanks in advance,

  2. Jennifer,

I have read your post and I realize what you are saying is true. Why do they want more technology in the classroom if they are attempting to reduce screen time? I believe the older children should have access to technology because, everything is moving towards technology. This will allows older children to stay ahead of the ever-changing world around them. I agree that children should not have screen time for non-sense programs; however, I feel that younger children should have access to some screen time if they are learning while watching; I believe this will have a positive impact on their achievement. Shows like sponge bob, and other silly shows on Disney or Nick Jr. is not appropriate for any children. More and more of these shows are teaching our children how to act silly; many of them are portraying children as idiots. What they are producing on television is nothing like the shows produced long ago. I am interested in learning more about what you find through your research.

  3. Jennifer,
Just like my fellow colleagues, I am interested in what you find out about technology and preschoolers. I am on the fence about the subject and maybe your research can help me. I know in my area technology is limited in the classroom to 20 minutes per day per child. With that being said, my supervisor said that she believed one day a child will no longer have learn to write their name because of technological advancements. What do you think about that statement as you further your research? As I said before, I cannot wait to read what you find out!

  4. I think you have chosen a great topic I have decided to research something similar to your topic. For my stimulation I have chosen technology and the affects it has on children. I am very excited to hear out everything turns out, maybe we can help each other if need be.
