Do not train children to learning by force and harshness, but direct them to it by what amuses their minds, so that you may be better able to discover with accuracy the peculiar bent of the genius of each.

  1. Jennifer,
I love this quote. I have been trying to explain to people and teachers for years now that children learn best when it is fun, hands-on, etc. The whole "drill and kill" method does not work. It may appear to work when test scores are successfully but how long does the child really retain the information. I do not remember half the stuff I learned in school because I was under the drill and kill method. I remember the fun and exciting things we did such as creating a dinosaur out of paper mache. What is even more incredible is the person that said this. It is amazing that a man that lived thousands of years ago understood this importance. Yet after all this time, we are still not listening to these words of wisdom.

I would also extend my thanks and support. This is what I posted on my blog for you:
I would like to thank Jennifer Coggin for giving me new insights and pushing my knowledge in this class. She always had an additional viewpoint for me to consider and think about. I was able to gain a lot from her. I know she will do well in her endeavors in our field. I wish her the best of luck!

    Thank you!
    Myra

  2. Jennifer,
I really like this quote. The education system is so focused on teaching to the tests anymore which is doing math drills and not leaving much room for games and making learning fun like it really could be for the children. This quote really gets it!
